Magic on the pond

I discovered this wonderful pond on Clairmont Street in Mahone Bay last year when I photographed a wedding, it's full of interesting subjects. The lily pads overrun the water, with many flowers growing up through the thick green blanket. I want to return, again, when the wind isn't so bad for serious macro stuff, lots of insects abound. Maybe I'll even catch a frog! D40 and the erstwhile 70-300mm VR.

Better hay baling images, at last!

I was rewarded with sweet overcast light as I came across the Penney brothers making hay, last night. It was on the verge of rain, but I was able to get these. The focus tracking on the D80 works great, there are clear advantages of the greater number of AF points on the higher-end DSLR's.

I keep anticipating that every short outing before sunest will be eventful for images, it's not always the case. I did manage to get these decent captures, last night, with the D40 and VR zooms. Photography is like almost anything else in life, some days, I seem on target, other days, not quite so much on target.

Quick shots of a farmer making hay

These will not make the front page of the local rag, I was able to get them on a drive-by in Lower Branch. The light as a bit harsh but Nikon's Active D-Lighting (ADL) can make the most of the sutuation. They are OK captures, I find I don't run across famers baling hay too often even though I am on the lookout for it. As usual, the 70-300mm VR zoom was the ticket.

Fishing just before sunset

I decided to take a short drive up the Lake Road around 8:15 or so just to see if I might see anything of interest. The waters were calm, the sun was hazy, it looked like an ideal setting for a nice sunset or afterglow. I noticed this chap stopped by the side of the road near the edge of the cemetery, he appeared to be getting out his fishing gear - I wasn't sure if he was starting or he was done. Fortunately, he was just getting ready to trudge down to the LaHave River and do some fishing. So much for the sunset, those happen all the time.

Sometimes, I just get plain lucky but you can increase the odds of good captures by knowing when the light is best. D80 and AF-S 70-300mm VR zoom.

Drive home from New Minas

I was disappointed the camera store was closed by 6pm, I needed some supplies last night - the drive was not a total loss, I was able to get a few decent captures as the sun started to break through after some rain.

Old Coolpix 8400 images

For some reason, I happen to have a bunch of RAW files in my laptop from a shooting in Lunenburg with the Coolpix 8400. I remember posting some images from this activity, not sure if these were included. I often miss that camera but not its clunkiness and sluggishnss, typical of compacts.
